Why most sincere speeches do not land
The instinct when you want to be moving is to reach for bigger words. "She has always been the most caring, generous, selfless person I have ever known" is entirely true and it will not move anyone, because it gives the room nothing to picture.
Emotion in a speech is transmitted by detail. The room feels something when it can see something. "She was nineteen, she had forty dollars, and she spent all of it on a bus ticket to sit in a hospital corridor with me" carries the same claim and lands completely differently.
The four ingredients of a moving speech
- One concrete image with an age, a place or an object attached.
- One thing they did that cost them something and that they never mentioned.
- One honest sentence about what they mean to you, said plainly and without metaphor.
- One specific observation about their partner — not a compliment, an observation.
Those four things, in that order, are a complete heartfelt speech in about three minutes. Everything else is optional.
Language to avoid
- "Words cannot express" — then find the words; that is the assignment.
- "My rock", "my other half", "my person" — universally used, so they say nothing about yours.
- Generic quotations about love, unless the couple genuinely loves that quote.
- "Not by blood but by choice" and its variants.
- Any sentence that describes your emotion rather than the thing that caused it.
