The short answer

Most people deliver a wedding speech at 130 to 150 words per minute. A 3-minute speech is roughly 400 words, a 5-minute speech roughly 650 words. Nerves make speakers faster, so a speech that times at 4 minutes at home usually lands nearer 3 minutes 30 on the day.

How long should each wedding speech be?

These are the lengths that work at a US reception, based on the running order most venues use. The word counts assume a normal speaking pace of 140 words per minute.

Why speeches run shorter on the day

Adrenaline reliably speeds people up. A speaker who rehearses at 140 words per minute in a quiet room will typically deliver at 155 to 165 with a microphone in their hand and two hundred people watching. That is why the calculator offers a fast pace: it is not a hypothetical, it is what most first-time speakers actually do.

The practical consequence is that you should write to the middle of your target range, not the top of it. If you are aiming for five minutes, write 650 words rather than 750. Laughter and pauses will add the difference back.

  • Add roughly 5 seconds for every laugh you expect to land.
  • Add 3 to 4 seconds for each deliberate pause you have marked.
  • Add 10 seconds for the toast itself — asking a room to raise glasses genuinely takes that long.
  • Subtract nothing for nerves. Nerves make you faster, not shorter.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 5 minute wedding speech?

About 650 to 700 words at a normal speaking pace of 140 words per minute. If you are a fast speaker or expect several laughs, write closer to 650.

How many words is a 3 minute wedding speech?

Roughly 400 to 420 words. Three minutes is the safest length for a nervous speaker and is long enough for one strong story plus a sincere close.

What is a good speaking pace for a wedding speech?

Between 130 and 150 words per minute. Slower than everyday conversation, which runs nearer 160, because a room of two hundred people needs time to follow and react.

Should I include the toast in the word count?

Yes, but add ten extra seconds. Inviting a room to raise their glasses and waiting for them to actually do it takes longer than the words suggest.

How long is too long for a wedding speech?

Past six minutes, most rooms start to drift regardless of quality. If several people are speaking, the whole section should stay under twenty-five minutes.
